Parent Eating Disorder and Support

Eating disorders create the perfect storm.

Parents feel helpless.

“I don’t understand what’s going on.”

“I don’t know how to help.”

“Why can’t she/he just eat normally.”

“Is it my fault?”

These are the words I often hear from parents trying to cope with and get help for their child with an eating disorder.

What would our friends think?

You’re afraid to talk to anyone about it for fear of being judged. The world seems like a lonely and frightening place as eating disorders often happen in secrecy and are kept in the closet.

The ubiquitous presence of social media and television provide the constant comparison for your child to judge themselves – and come up short.

Eating or not eating is one thing that helps your child cope. They may fear everything else.

Parents don’t cause their children to have an eating disorder.

Eating disorders are not a choice; they are not caused by you, the parent. While they are called “eating” disorders, some of the symptoms involve thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that have nothing to do with food.

Eating disorders are biological, genetic, brain-based mental disorders that affect every race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, etc. They do not discriminate. They are treatable illnesses that carry a high mortality rate.
